Welcome to Nyora SpeedBowl Online
Nyora Speedbowl is situated just off the South Gippsland Hwy, at the recreation reserve in the tiny picturesque country town of Nyora, 92 klms south east of Melbourne. Our History On the 4th March 1960 a small group of local people formed a motoring club for “the lads of the town”. This club bore the name of Nyora Car Club. Over the next couple of years as their membership grew, they held several car rallys and outings along with racing at the nearby Trafalgar and Garfield tracks. Several approaches were made to the Nyora recreation reserve and finally in 1962 they were given permission to clear a swampy, overgrown area at the eastern end. Armed with a bulldozer, picks and shovels they began the task of forming a scramble track. It was called the Nyora Hot Rod Track and officially opened on 17th March 1963. Numerous issues with the Health Department led to a rocky path over the next few years, but the club continued to grow and in 1970 the bulldozers were again brought in. By January 1971 the oval track, as we now know it was formed. The decision was made to apply for Affiliation to the Victorian Speedway Council which saw in April 1973 the club stage its first State Title meeting, the class being Victorian Super Modifieds. During the following years the membership continued to grow, placing the club amongst the top 3 in the state. Race meetings were held regularly and numerous state titles were granted to the venue. Sprintcars made their first appearance in 1989 and that move by the committee of the time really put Nyora on the map. The tight oval became known as “the Bull pit” a real drivers’ track, feared, but loved by many of the top sprintcar drivers. The annual running of World Series Sprintcars continued to promote the venue and it proudly wore the mantel of “Gippslands Home of Motorsport”. Promotional events such as Monster Trucks and Motor Cross were introduced to the calendar, unfortunately one such event was to ultimately see in 2005 the demise of the club known as the Nyora Car Club. Immediate action was taken to see the club reformed and Incorporated as Nyora Raceway Inc with all Life Memberships carried over to the new club. After some tough times the club continues to rebuild, with the committee lead by Lloyd Hobson President (17 years) and a steadily growing membership, who are all committed to return the now known Nyora Speedbowl to its former glory, a tribute to the hard working people involved in our proud history.
